Presentation

I have produced an online edition (forthcoming) of an epigraphic database of ancient Greek and Latin inscriptions discovered in and around Beirut.

As part of the international research program on the Greek and Latin inscriptions of Syria (IGLS), this database was encoded in the XML-TEI EpiDoc format by Julien Aliquot (CNRS, laboratoire Hisoma) on the basis of modelization elaborated by Élysabeth Hue-Gay (Université Lyon 2, laboratoire Hisoma).

This online publication complements the printed version published in 2024 at the Presses de l’Institut français du Proche‑Orient :

Aliquot, Julien, Inscriptions grecques et latines de la Syrie, 8/1, Beyrouth et sa région, Beyrouth/Caen, Presses de l’Ifpo/Presses universitaires de Caen, Bibliothèque archéologique et historique 225, 2023. ISBN version numérique : 978-2-35159-567-1.

The project

This digital edition is part of the Portail d’Édition de Sources Structurées project (PRESS), which was funded by the French national fund for open science (FNSO).

The PRESS project aims to make automated tools for the online publishing of complex editorial forms, including ancient epigraphic corpora.

It brings together several services of the Université Caen-Normandie:

Texte, apparat critique, traduction, commentaire

IGLS 8/1 and the PRESS project

The online edition of 8/1 serves as a matrix for the publication in the PRESS portal of epigraphic corpora encoded according to the same interpretation of the XML-TEI EpiDo standard. The processing of the 500 or so inscriptions in the corpus includes the display :

The online edition of IGLS 8/1 serves as a matrix for the publication in the PRESS portal of epigraphic corpora encoded according to the same interpretation of the XML-TEI EpiDoc standard. The processing of the 500 or so inscriptions in the corpus includes the display:

  • of the metadata of the inscription
  • of its original text in ancient language
  • of its facsimile
  • of the XML-TEI EpiDoc encoding
  • of its critical apparatus
  • of its translation
  • of its commentary
  • and of its bibliography
Index : vocabulaire grec et latin

The MaX XML display engine

This digital edition was made with the MaX XML display engineXML (MaX). MaX is an open source tool which was developed at the Université de Caen Normandie by the CERTIC and the Pôle Document Numérique.

Based on the XML database system BaseX, it uses technologies such as RestXQ, XSLT, XQuery, as well as all the typical resources of front-end development.
